Cisco gets government clearance to buy Cerent
WASHINGTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Cisco Systems Inc. <CSCO.O>
has received clearance to complete its $6.9 billion acquisition
of Cerent Corp., bolstering its entry into the telephone
market, a filing with the Federal Trade Commission showed
Wednesday.
The FTC reported that antitrust authorities granted "early
termination" to the deal, meaning the companies may merge.
Cisco Chief Executive John Chambers has repeatedly said he
wants to move quickly into the market for communications
switching -- basically, making equipment for telephone
companies in competition with traditional players like Lucent
Technologies, Inc. <LU.N> and Nortel Networks Corp.<NT.TO>.
<NT.TO>.
Because of the vast opportunity, Chambers has said his firm
is aggressively targeting far larger rivals with long and close
relationships with phone companies.
The Cerent deal is believed to be the most ever paid for a
privately held technology company, but Chambers said in
announcing the deal last month in Austin, Texas, "We who
understood our market understood that optical transport was
going to explode and so our shareholders as well as industry
analysts have been asking us for a while what we were going to
do."
The market for telephone equipment is worth more than $300
billion and increasing demand for the Internet is putting
pressure on communications firms to upgrade their networks.
Traditional phone networks will be replacing their
circuit-switch technology with networks that carry packets of
digital data the way the Internet does.

People don't realize it (except Mark), but wine has been an explosive industry for Ca just like the internet! I drink wine every night, theres a huge aisle (or 2) at Safeway. Not 10 years ago.

I did see Coppola on TV once say that its hard to make a profit in the business though... I'm not sure what the issue is there, too much competition? But I'll bet you could have made a lot of money on Napa real estate in the last 10 years too...
