Report from PCS99

I attended the G* USA announcement/demonstration today in the parking lot of convention center at PCS99. Announcement of name change from ATSS to G* USA was made by Mike Kerr of AT and Anthony Navarra of G*. Dr. J was there too with some positive comments. About 20 G*/Qualcomm employees were in attendance demonstrating about 20 Q trimode phones and one car phone installed in a SUV. I made about 4-5 calls all which were high voice quality and no drops. I did get a busy signal once or twice which I consider a failed attempt since the party I was calling has voice mail. In summary my experience was very positive. The phones are not as bulky as I expected, and seemed light enough to me. They definitely are not pocket sized though.
Some thoughts on upcoming service:
The rollout dates are definitely moving to the right. G* USA will not have true commercial service till 1/00 or 2/00. They plan some initial beta use starting Nov. with limited special customers. I believe there may be some software bugs that are still being ironed out; their top priority seems to be tweaking the system to provide robust service and minimizing customer disappointments. Not a bad strategy considering Irid.
Although pricing is not official, most reps. quoted $1200-1500 for the phone and $1.50 - 2.00 per minute which is disappointingly high in my opinion. However I can't blame them for wanting to skim the price insensitive customers; just hope they're prepared to lower prices quickly if demand is low.
I believe commercial rollout will be slow, and subscriber buildup will be slow. I don't see 1 million users till end of '01, a year later that Bernies rosy forecast. Given that, the stock will probably be dead money for at least a year. I fully expect to see the teens before we see the thirties. However, longer term the sky could be the limit. In the near term, a lot depends on service availability, and feedback on phone/network performance. One really needs to use the phone a week or two to get a good feel how it performs in various situations (50 miles at sea, under a tree, fog, smog, etc.)
Keep the faith G* shareholders!!
