Bargain hunters boosting blue chips (Speaking of Irony)

NEW YORK (September 23, 1999 2:43 p.m. EDT nandotimes.com) - Blue-chip stocks turned higher Thursday as investors began a tentative search for bargains after two days of sharp losses.

In afternoon trading on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 40.84 at 10,564.91.

Broader stock indicators were mixed. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 0.47 at 1,310.98, and the Nasdaq composite index was down 16.00 at 2,842.16.

Analysts said the turnaround in the Dow was natural after two major declines that knocked 300 points off the Dow. The modest buying spree, however, prompted little enthusiasm about the market's condition.

"There's no new fundamental reason for the weak market, but there's a great deal of nervousness," said William Meehan, chief market analyst for Cantor Fitzgerald.

The dollar inched higher against the yen in New York. The dollar was quoted at 104.26 yen, up from 103.93 yen late Wednesday.
