What you're thinking could also be accomplished, in theory of course, by a general purpose network processor. Arguably, it would even be more cost-effective that way. Too early I suppose to make cost comparisons in that area. I Tend to favor the network processor approach as ultimately winning out for such things, but only time will tell.
