There is another side of steppers I haven't seen mentioned. The newer steppers require a special gas mixture to be continuously supplied to the lens system. In addition temperature and humidity have to be controlled within certain limits or the lens can be permanently damaged. The lens systems take a long time to manufacture so replacement could take a long time if a lot of them have to be replaced. I remember this from a power outage several years ago where I worked. I wonder if the various plants had adequate power, gas supply etc. to maintain the steppers? I am not a photo guy so if I am off base here, somebody jump in.
