Article on Banyan and MAD...Today's focus: Banyan offering Active Directory Planning Service ---------------------------------------------------------------- By Dave Kearns Today's newsletter could be subtitled "Oh, how the mighty have fallen." Banyan, once the acknowledged leader in directory services with its pioneering StreetTalk service in the Vines network operating system, now wants no more than to hold your hand while you set up Microsoft's Active Directory. Banyan's Worldwide Services division - now a bigger moneymaker than the division selling Vines - has announced what it calls its Active Directory Planning Service (ADPS) for companies and organizations that plan to embrace the Windows 2000 Server platform. For these companies, the Active Directory infrastructure will emerge as the fundamental element of the corporate network. According to Banyan, and I fully concur, organizations can position their enterprise for e-business while reducing their total cost of ownership only by planning and understanding the impact of Active Directory implementation. Banyan's portfolio of consulting services for Active Directory includes: * Assessment Services: providing a comprehensive look at an organization's enterprise environment and offering a cohesive view of current directory domain structures within the organization. * Planning and Design Services: prioritizing directory-related needs and providing a comprehensive plan for schema design, domain consolidation, directory replication, migration and coexistence with present directories. * Pilot, Implementation and Integration Services: implementing and deploying Active Directory, consolidating new and existing data sources for an enterprise directory service and assisting in the development or conversion of directory-enabled applications. Midsize to large networks currently running on Windows NT that soon will be upgrading to Windows 2000 do need to do lots of planning. And it's the wise network manager who harnesses all the expertise available, so Banyan's move can be seen as a boon to many. Nevertheless, contracting with Banyan to plan a Microsoft network still strikes me as asking the fox (granted, it's a tired, old, toothless fox) to help you design henhouse security. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FOR RELATED LINKS -- Click here first for unlimited access to Network World Fusion: nwfusion.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Out with old, in with new at Banyan, Network World, 06/14/99nwfusion.com Microsoft and Banyan agreement, Network World, 02/01/99nwfusion.com Archive of Network World Fusion Focus on Directories newsletters:nwfusion.com About Virtual Quill ------------------- Virtual Quill is a writing agency serving the computer and networking industries.
