Maybe the tobacco companies should sue the DOJ under the RICO statutes for extortion, etc.

In Mn. the tobacco defense was prepared to prove that because of shortened life spans caused by tobacco related diseases, there was a net SAVINGS to the tax payers because of smoking. The judge summarily refused to allow the defense to present this evidence.

BTW, the MN. judge in the case committed numerous errors and quietly left the bench after the case was finished.

The tobacco companies bear some responsibility for their plight by giving in and settling and not fighting the cases on their merits.
