other companies that may become big players in the wireless area. small to mid-size with compelling tech.

I am not aware of many companies with that profile (excepting Rambus and Arm of course). But one small company that may be a coming player, and has some QCOM longs paying some attention to, is Wi-Lan in Canada. I have spent next to zero time investigating them, so I really have no idea of their potential. But, you may want to have a look.
