It is unfortunate that Dell competition has to be dissed in order to highlight Dell because Dell's business model and execution already serve to set Dell apart very nicely
My point exactly. DELL has managed to cover 80% of their key markets with 20% of the products fielded by their competition. That has got to be smart business. We now see them selectively going after the other 20% in a very effective way.

As far as CPQ's software offerings, especially operating systems, they currently offer 5 flavors of Unix, 3 of which are internally developed. They probably need to consolidate to 1 Unix and put their effort behind that, while continuing to support the key external volume linux flavors (Linux and SCO / Monterray). They also have the OpenVMS and Tandem NSK operating systems to maintain.

Software in general is a high margin business but without volume it is a black hole for money due to the high R&D costs and ongoing maintenance, which eat that margin in a hurry.
