Clinton just can't help himself:

The smoke-filled room

Although President Clinton enthusiastically endorsed yesterday's Justice Department lawsuit against the tobacco industry, he has been unable to kick the tobacco habit himself.

At yesterday's briefing, White House Press Secretary Joe Lockhart said the lawsuit "is something that he believes in strongly." If he feels so strongly, asked The Washington Times, then why is he still smoking cigars?

"The president believes that's a bad habit," Mr. Lockhart explained. "But it's a habit he hasn't broken."

CBS News correspondent Bill Plante piped up: "Has he broken his other bad habit?"

"Bill, if you want to sit there and articulate them, I'll take them one at a time," growled the presidential spokesman.

"Oooh," went the press corps.

"Go ahead," Mr. Lockhart dared. "We want to descend further and mark a new low. Not impossible."

Mr. Plante, considered one of the more tenacious White House correspondents, decided to let this challenge pass.
