the trip to Cripple now uses a choice of new roads, the tunnel is available to look at for the history minded, but is now well removed from the main route. Many of the unsafe gas filled, long abandoned mine shafts are now covered and the area is far removed from that you knew long ago.

I suspect the silver mining region you are thinking about is Leadville and a major mine in the nearby area which was recently picked up by SSC.
