Merrill's Internet basket starts trading By Emily Church, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 1:08 PM ET Sep 23, 1999 NewsWatch NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Moving on the popularity of Internet stocks, Merrill Lynch on Thursday launched a new security that represents a basket of the 20 largest Internet stocks by market capitalization. CBS MarketWatch Columns Updated: 9/23/99 11:43:22 AM ET The security, called Internet Holdrs, started trading Thursday on the American Stock Exchange under the ticker: (HHH: news, msgs). The security rose 1/4 to 108 1/2 in recent trading. Merrill began selling the Holdrs through its retail customer base about a week ago, representing 3.7 million of the shares at $400 million on Wednesday. Merrill has ambitions that the Holdr will become a bellwether for Internet stocks. America Online (AOL: news, msgs) is single largest component of the basket. It's followed by Yahoo (YHOO: news, msgs), Amazon.com (AMZN: news, msgs), EBay (EBAY: news, msgs), At Home (ATHM: news, msgs), Priceline (PCLN: news, msgs), CMGI (CMGI: news, msgs) Inktomi (INKT: news, msgs), RealNetworks (RNWK: news, msgs) and Exodus (EXDS: news, msgs) to name the top ten.
