BA no comment on Boeing 717 order

LONDON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - British Airways Plc on Sunday
said the Boeing 717 and the Airbus A318 were the frontrunners
to win a order to revamp BA's short-haul aircraft fleet, but
declined to comment on a newspaper report that the airline was
set to order Boeing 717s.

A BA spokesman said he could not comment on a report in the Sunday Times that BA was close to
ordering up to 50 Boeing 717 short-haul aircraft worth almost 2.5 billion pounds ($4.11 billion).

``It's speculation,' he said.

He said BA had invited Boeing (NYSE:BA - news), Airbus Industrie [ARBU.CN] and British
Aerospace Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: BA.L) to bid to supply the aircraft some time ago.
But BA had not yet specified the number of aircraft.

The new fleet will replace BA's 53 Boeing 757s, which the Sunday Times said Boeing could take in
a part exchange deal with Boeing.

The switch from the 150-195 seat 757 to smaller 100-seat aircraft forms part of BA's strategy to
maximise profit from flights by cutting economy seats and increasing the proportion of business
passengers.

A deal with Boeing would be a boost for Rolls-Royce Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: RR.L) the
newspaper said, which makes the 717 engines in a joint venture with German partner BMW
