Jon, you cannot be happy if the focus of your life is on your petty, transient identity. You have to be a part of something larger, something that arouses your esteem, and can engage your commitment. That is one reason to learn history, read literature, study art: to appreciate the glorious artifacts of our civilization, and identify with its continued vitality. Also, philanthropy and politics can draw one out of brooding, and make one feel part of something worthwhile.The main thing is to become engaged by things that arouse your concern, and the rest will pretty much take care of itself.....
