A spokeswoman for PC OEM Micron Electronics Inc. has confirmed that the company will forgo Intel Corp.'s Camino chipset and Direct Rambus DRAM in a line of consumer PCs coming out next week, although Micron will adopt the technology at a later date.

The Millennia PC models will use a chipset from Via Technologies Inc. and PC133 SDRAM, which the spokeswoman said delivers "Rambus-like performance for $200 to $300 less than other systems."

Industry sources said that Micron will adopt the Camino late in the year, most likely in December when availability of both the chipset and Direct RDRAM have been established. OEMs have said previously that they're concerned about the stability of the Camino after the numerous bugs found in its predecessor, the Intel 810. There are also persistent worries over the availabilty of Direct RDRAM and its pricing.

Intel is expected to announce the Camino, or "Intel 820," chipset on Monday, together with the formal launch of Direct Rambus DRAM.
