Current CS option activity is heavy.

Option activity is often heavier just before earnings are released, just after earnings are released, and just before significant news is announced (illegal insider info), just after significant news is announced, and on significant rumors.

Note that each option contract controls 100 shares of stock.

On a quiet day, the volume on the most actively traded
CS call option is often 200 contracts or less. Today
Thu Sep 23, 1999 the following CS near month options:
CS Oct 15 Call volume of 422 contracts
CS Oct 17.5 Call volume of 2755 contracts
CS Oct 20 Call volume of 2027 contracts
CS Oct 22.5 Call volume of 1063 contracts
CS Oct 25 Call volume of 600 contracts
while CS stock closed at 15 15/16 with a range
of 15 3/4 to 17 7/16.

Usually the most active option contracts are for strike
prices slightly above and slightly below the current
stock price. What is interesting is there is a lot
of activity in the Oct 20, Oct 22.5, and Oct 25 calls, indicating to me that there is a lot of speculation that CS will rise to around 20 or more before October options expire (on October 15, 1999 - the 3rd Friday of the month).
