Matsushita aims for 20% of U.S. DVD player market
TOKYO, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co <6752.T> said on Wednesday it expects to sell 600,000 to 700,000 digital video disc (DVD) players in the United States in 1999, capturing a 20 percent share of the market.

Yoshinori Kobe, a Matsushita Electric director, told a briefing for reporters that the U.S. market for DVD players is expected to reach 3.0 million to 3.5 million units this year.

He added that the company expects to maintain its 20 percent share of the U.S. market next year.

Matsushita Electric also unveiled a hard-disk recorder able to record TV programmes in digital format.

The company hopes to launch the product in November in the United States at a list price of $699 and aims for sales of 100,000 units during the first year.

The company did not disclose official U.S. sales figures for DVD players in 1998, although a spokesman said Matsushita accounted for an estimated 30 percent of the 1.08 million units sold in the U.S. market last year.

Matsushita launched its DVD players in the United States in March 1997.
