Aironet Shares Gain On Rumors PC Makers Interested In Its Connectors

======================================================================
NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shares of computer-network-products maker
Aironet Wireless Communications Inc. rose as much as 15% Thursday on
rumors the company is in talks with the country's top computer makers to
feature its wireless LAN connectors - one of the hottest technologies in
computers and telecommunications - in their computers.
Aironet, an Akron, Ohio-based maker of local-area-network - or LAN -
connectors, traded higher on speculation that computer companies, mainly
Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) or Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), were
considering offering computers with Aironet's wireless LAN products.
Wireless LANs, which allow mobile connection to computer networks,
are made by a handful of high-tech companies, and typically are
installed only in job-specific computers used by large institutions, not
personal computers, which Dell and Compaq make.
"The whole field has taken off," said CIBC Markets Corp. analyst Lior
Bregman "Investors are interested in wireless LAN."
Shares of Aironet (AIRO) reached a high of $24.25 Thursday before
closing up 68.8 cents, or 3.5%, at $20.625, on volume of 3.3 million
shares. Average daily volume is 1.3 million shares.
Bregman said that although he did hear rumors of possible talks with
Dell, he thinks the technology in general is what has investors excited,
not just the rumors.
He said investor interest, coupled with a growing market, may
eventually lead to some contracts between computer companies and
Aironet.
A Compaq spokesman, who declined to confirm the rumor, did say that
the company is on record as saying that "wireless is an important area
that we are looking into."
Representatives of Aironet and Dell weren't immediately available for
comment.
