Gee bill you seemed to miss something.... let me provide some assistance. Here is the comment in all it's glory.

Russo, who steered the company's business communications systems unit through a turnaround when it was part of AT&T, wastes no
time in pooh-poohing Cisco's two recent acquisitions. In those deals, Cisco paid nearly $7 billion for two optical networking
companies, Cerent and Monterey Networks, in order to bec ome a leader in optical hardware used by big data networks. Cisco can
pick up "two companies,' she says, but Lucent can flex "over 2,000 patents alone in the optical field" and "either already has or will
soon have what Cisco is acquiring."

Russo's comments were not to state that LU was an expert.. it was a shot at the acquisitions and that LU had more patents...not that they had technological expertise. Fact is that most of those patents likely came from people that are no longer with the company. The other fact is that the purchase of Cerent and Monterrey were also an acquisition of talent. So, bill... I in fact did not misunderstand the article at all. Russo was waving her patents in Cisco's face - not LU's technolgical prowise. She doesn't even say that having 2000 patents demonstrates LU's prowise. She is very clear. LU's patents - 2000 of them - are unmatched and that buying Cerent and Monterrey can not compare.

Furthermore I made no comments regarding how LU's patents effect Cerent or Monterrey... Boy, I'm having trouble following your bouncing ball. You shouldn't crack the bottle so early in the day <vbg>. All I said was that the cross patent licensing agreement covers all communications patents - yes including embedded communications devices. When I said microelectronics I meant that that deals with foundries and microelectronic design - not the communication technologies.. those are exposed the cross patent agreement.

bill c. Please don't respond. This is futile...and...well... I'm having trouble keeping up with your spinning my comments or taking them out of context. Here are the facts.

1. LU has a lot of patents
2. 2000 specifically on optics
3. Of those 2000 some even apply to communications!!
4. Many of these patents have been designed by people no longer at LU. Russo made no comment about having expertise... only patents. I made no blunder - read the article.
5. Patents that are communications oriented are cross licensed - at least those that existed at the time of the agreement.. net zero benefit to LU or CSCO (well except anything that Cisco might have picked up from Cerent or Monterrey)
6. Cisco purchased Cerent and Monterry for technology and expertise to get into the optical market
7. Cisco now has a few engineers and a little bit product.
8. LU is still the king in this space but is apparently concerned.
9. Russo is posturing LU in order to maintain thier leadership. Pointing to all the patents is her way of proving LU's technological prowise. Again, no comment was made about engineering. Maybe it was implied but I didn't see it.
10.Now I need a beer <vbg>.
