Rocket Scientist: Do it yourself and make do seems like the way to go. Agree. Glad to hear that a real company like Schlumberger is in the business of making G* fixed phones though. The more, the merrier. (Schlumberger has a Q license, no?) And some people in some places are likely to find them useful, even if do it yourself with cut and paste stuff is more pervasive. Best. Thanks. I downloaded the "Hotbird" report earlier today, but haven't read it yet.

I agree that it would be easier to get distributed a bunch of simpler fixed phone/enhanced antenna models. They're simpler to make and cheaper. There is a nitch for the self-contained units, imo--like 30,000 Chinese villages without electricity. Whether initial limited manufacturing resources should be devoted to this is another question. And there we'd probably quite agree.
