Mannesmann demerger lifts shares-Financial Times
By Our Summaries Staff

Mannesmann, the German conglomerate, announced on Thursday it would split into two - creating separate companies for its telecommunications business and its engineering and automotive activities.

The new companies would be components of Germany's Dax 30 blue-chip index by 2001, Mannesmann said. It has presented the plan to its supervisory board for inspection and expects a decision early next year.

Company shares were suspended at 0945 GMT, but rose more than 8 per cent when they resumed trading at 1100 GMT, which also lifted the German stock market. At 1300 GMT, Mannesmann was up 7.96 per cent at E152.50 while the Xetra Dax was up 1.35 per cent.

Mannesmann, which is based in Dsseldorf, said it had used separate strategies in recent years to increase the size of its telecoms business and improve the profitability of the engineering and automotive sector.

The two arms would be financed separately from 2001, it said, and new executive boards should be in place by the end of next year.

The move had been widely predicted and could insulate the group from possible takeover attempts, analysts said.

Vodafone AirTouch, the UK cellular telephone company, is seen as a possible buyer for Mannesmann's German and Italian telephone companies, but the German group said it had no immediate need of a partner for the new divisions.

Vodafone shares set a new record on Thursday, climbing 4.25 per cent to œ13.99 before slipping back slightly to sit at œ13.98, up 4.17 per cent.

But analysts believe Vodafone is unlikely to make an aggressive bid until it has fully integrated Airtouch which it bought on June 30. The cell phone company is also occupied by its recently announced joint venture with Bell Atlantic of the US.
