IBM to set up PC plant in Pondicherry

Global major IBM is setting up a PC manufacturing plant in Pondicherry. The company which formally launched IBM India is looking to provide the industry with leading software, hardware and services, especially those relating to Indian corporates in e-business.

The company has been hiring Indian personnel at the rate of about 1,000 a year and is expecting to hire another 150 for their research facility. It is also looking to make India the base for its global support software services.

The Asean revenues for the company stand at approximately $10 billion and the company expects a contribution of about one-third of this from the Indian operations.

John Joyce, president, IBM Asia Pacific, informed, "IBM is committed to India, both as a market and as a resource base. India is the key emerging market for IBM in the Asia-Pacific region. Our business in India has been increasing significantly as we continue to deliver world class solutions to our customers. We will launch new initiatives in various areas and will continue to leverage the enormous skill base that India offers, particularly in software and services."

In India, the company has been targetting large clients like Siemens with whom it is working on strategic software development, and the Reserve Bank of India with whom it is working on rejuvenating the cheque-sorting applications across the country.

Ranjit Limaye, managing director and CEO, IBM India, said, "IBM's technology and solutions for Indian organisations provide a competitive edge in this era of globalisation. The issues that are relevant for companies internationally are now equally relevant for Indian organisations."

IBM is looking to meet the specialised needs of large organisations through industry expertise in areas such as banking, manufacturing, process, distribution, telecommunications, government and education.

Over the next few months IBM will conduct roadshows to demonstrate its products and solutions for small and medium businesses in 16 cities across the country.

In the last three months IBM has set up over 60 e-business education centres through franchisees across India and it is now looking to replicate the model in South Africa, the Philippines and Bangladesh.

IBM's India Research Laboratory is expanding its infrastructure and its new facility is expected to open this year. The centre is looking to develop cutting-edge weather forecasting solutions.
