EVRC-Enhanced variable rate coder. I thought even IS-95a used a variable rate vocoder. Maybe this is an improved version with higher efficiency. I think they are used to turn the analog voice signal into a digital stream and, depending upon conditions and network requirements, will give either better voice quality when conditions are good or conserve bandwidth when required. Maybe someone else can elaborate on the specifics.

Cant elaborate much on what Bux said....except that the EVRC first showed up in the MSM2310 and is also a feature on the MSM3000. Most phones out now should incorporate it. Not sure if the networks need to do anything to turn it "on". PCS estimated a 60% improvement in capacity from just this improvement.

Slacker
