Actually, the news of lower-than-expected unemployment claims, which makes it more likely the Fed will raise rates on 10/5, is a more reasonable explanation for the market drop. Steve's gaffe was the straw that broke the camel's back. Microsoft execs regularly try to lower expectations. It was a bit stronger, however, than their usual, "growth rates going forward can be expected to slow".

It would be like Al Gore saying, "I want to be your next President. I promise to raise taxes, make potholes in streets, and lower educational standards." The initial reaction: is this a joke? The second reaction: what's the hidden agenda here?
