Natural Gas Popularity To Force Price Up, Predictions in Latest Issue of World Energy

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1999--Major energy consultants and industry insiders writing in the latest issue of World Energy magazine agree that natural gas is gaining importance as a global energy source, and some question how supply will be able to keep up with demand.

Chris Ross, senior director of Arthur D. Little's Global Energy Practice, believes that, to the extent that emissions rights are traded or a carbon tax is instituted in developed countries, "natural gas will start to enjoy a 'form premium' and will be valued higher than its BTu equivalency with higher carbon-content fuels." Thus, he predicts natural gas demand to increase the fastest among conventional fuels.

Even more interesting is the question posed by Luke Corbett, chairman of Kerr-McGee, who predicts that over the next 10 years, 260 TCF of gas will be consumed in the U.S., which represents 100 TCF more than current proven reserves. "Can we really expect to deplete all existing U.S. proven reserves, plus find and produce an extra 100+TCF in the next 11 years, while keeping a lid on prices?"

The new World Energy also focuses on the environment and social responsibility. Sir John Browne, group chief of BP Amoco, discusses the bad image carried by big business, and explains why his company believes that acting socially responsibly is good business. And Shell Transport and Trading's chairman, Mark Moody-Stuart, discusses how new technologies are critical to sustainable development.

World Energy is the only publication that covers the global energy industry from the inside. It publishes articles by the CEOs and presidents of major companies, plus energy ministers, regulators and elected officials, all in an unedited format.
