My 2 cents on your interesting exchange about the
differences between wireless CDMA and SCDMA for
cable: one subtle difference is that for wireless CDMA,
the processing gain is achieved by letting new users join
with the same power as existing users. This is because
the medium does not impose any total power constraint.
Unfortunately, cable has a total power constraint, so that
as new users log on, existing users need to lower their
power, which decreases the processing gain. Thus,
noise immunity over congested SCDMA systems should
fall well below what wireless CDMA can offer.

On the other hand, I believe that TERN may be able to
achieve slightly higher upstream transmission rates
over HFC upgraded plants than over non-upgraded
plants,. This would be done by spreading
32- or 64-QAM signals, instead of 16-QAM. However,
I am not sure if a modulation order has been
selected yet for DOCSIS 1.2. Yet, I expect DOCSIS
1.2 will not meet with much enthusiasm, since
cable operators will probably be exhausted after
the push towards 1.0 compliance.
