Balmer's statement compared to the news that MSN is raising the price of it's internet access 2 bucks a month is POO POO. That's the big news of the day. AOL is celebrating tonight and rightfully so. A month or 2 ago MSFT came out and made statements that led us to think they were going to lower the price of MSN to try to compete with the mighty AOL. I'm still not totally convinced the story is true but if indeed MSN raises their access rates to AOL levels it shows everyone that a threat of lower ISP rates is a myth. And AOL will just gain more market share. I'm glad I own both. Microsoft raises Internet access price by $2 SEATTLE, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Software giant Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) will raise prices for unlimited access to its MSN Internet service to $21.95 from $19.95, company executives said on Thursday. The move, to take effect this autumn, matches a recent price increase by industry leader America Online Inc. (NYSE:AOL - news) and also signals that Microsoft is unwilling to chase upstart companies that offer free Internet access. At the same time, Microsoft will step up its aggressiveness with an offer of a $400 credit at participating retailers for customers who pre-pay for 3 years of Internet access, Microsoft Senior Vice President John DeVaan said. Customers who took advantage of that deal would effectively be getting access for about $7 a month, DeVaan said at a technology conference. DeVaan said Microsoft was committed to its Internet access business, which he said recently surpassed the 2 million subscriber mark, making it a distant second to AOL, which claims 17 million flagship users.
