It's overextended investors talking with their brokers about upcoming margin calls. Some trading threads were marked by total panic between 3PM and 4PM, followed by a funeral parlor atmosphere of dread.

If you don't stay nimble in a choppy market, Mr. Whipsaw will get you. That's true long and short.
