Well, this morning's New York Times blames Ballmer for the market tanking yesterday. The top headline on page 1 of the Business section reads (in bold type) "Stocks Plunge Over Remark On Microsoft". It took three quarters of a column talking about Ballmer's remarks before the story noted that "Stocks also suffered from the dollar's slide against the yen..." More interesting is the article on page 2 of that section, "Microsoft Sets Shifts in Internet Strategy". The article states that MS will redesign MSN, offer a piece of Expedia to the public and intorduce a network computing device .The company called the new approach its "everyday Web" strategy and, in a complete turnabout, said it no longer had a dogmatic commitment to the PC platform. I have had a little clipping from InfoWorld on my desk for about a year. Next to a cartoon illustration of Bill and Larry shouting at each other it states: "The trouble with taking sides against Gates is that he's no dummy. He doesn't really disagree with Ellison. Gates knows Ellison was right about NCs, at least on the client side. He just can't give Ellison the satisfaction. So instead of Windows NC, he calls it Windows CE." The Times article states that Microsoft's NCs will be based on Windows CE. Now that Microsoft has embraced Network Computing, who will come forward to admit that once again, Larry Ellison was not only correct in his assessment of where the industry was going, but a few years ahead of everyone else in his vision. Or perhaps, next week, Microsoft will simply state the obvious as fact: Nobody should be surprised by their latest announcements since after all, they were the ones who invented Network Computing in the first place. -Michael
