I'm about as anti-Microsoft as anyone on this board, but I want to point out a few things about Ballmer's statements.

1) Lots of people believe that Microsoft is way overvalued and the dot-coms are maniacally overvalued. Lots of people also believe that throwing billions at Buy.com is throwing billions down a toilet. So why not give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he feels like telling the truth?

2) Microsoft has had trouble keeping it's employees because they have gotten rich. Why not make them a little poorer and force them to rely a little more on salary for a while?

3) Conversely, Microsoft has had trouble hiring employees because of competition from dot-com companies. Why get an 80% increase in stock price at Microsoft when you get get a 1000% increase at Amazon? Ballmer specifically took aim at the dot-coms. A crash in all the stocks hurts Microsoft less. They still got 20 billion in cash after all.

So Ballmer tells the truth, tries to keep his employees from leaving and tries to make it easier for Microsoft to hire new employees. And Yahoo goes from super-super-super ridiculous valuation to super-super ridiculous valuation because of it. Fine with me.
