Iridium to Support Taiwan Disaster Recovery Operation BW1306 SEP 23,1999 8:53 PACIFIC 11:53 EASTERN ( BW)(DC-IRIDIUM)(IRID) Iridium to Support Taiwan Disaster Recovery Operation Business Editors TAIWAN, TAIPEI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1999--In the wake of the Island's worst earthquake, Pacific Iridium Telecom Corporation and Motorola have joined forces to provide Motorola Satellite Series (TM) 9500 portable phones and free airtime to support Taiwan's National Department of Defense search and rescue efforts in Nantou County and Puli Town, areas the most affected by the earthquake. The Iridium system, which can operate independently of local terrestrial infrastructure, is the only communications system to be unaffected by this earthquake which caused a major power and telephone exchange outage. The power outages also affected terrestrial- based cellular stations on the island. Pacific Iridium has provided 20 Motorola Satellite Series portable phones, spare batteries, solar panel chargers and other accessories to the Taiwan military personnel and relief organizations to enable them to communicate and coordinate search and rescue operations in the most devastated locations. Pacific Iridium is providing free airtime, the associated landline costs as well as on-site support. Motorola has shipped an additional 50 Motorola Satellite Series portable phones for the rescue operations. One radio broadcast station - Chinese Radio Networks- a customer of Pacific Iridium has been on site at Puli Town reporting live using a Motorola Iridium phone.
