DJ Iridium's Sri Lankan Ops Awaits Defense Ministry Okay

COLOMBO (Dow Jones)--Sri Lanka's Telecommunications Regulatory Commission said it will submit a
report to the nation's defense ministry ahead of approving an operating license for Iridium World
Communications Ltd. (IRIQE) in the Indian Ocean island.

Radley Dissanayake, director of the Regulatory Commission, told Dow Jones Newswires the commission is
seeking clearance from Sri Lanka's defense ministry for final approval of the license.

"We expect defense clearance to be granted in the next few weeks," he said.

US-based Iridium had to postpone the Sri Lankan launch as the defense ministry declined to approve the
new system right away.

The defense ministry initially balked at the idea of satellite phones as it feared the rebel Tamil Tigers fighting
government forces will use the facility to strengthen its communications link to the outside world.

Preliminary investigations carried out by the defense ministry showed that the iridium phones can't be
operated in the north and east of the country, where the fighting is concentrated.

Iridium successfully launched its spare and replacement satellites for its $5 billion global phone system last
November and completed agreements with local partners in early 1999.

Sri Lanka Telecom Ltd. will chosen the telecommunications giant as a partner in its Sri Lankan operations.
The two companies will share customer billing and call charges.

Sri Lanka Telecom is 35% owned and managed by Japan's Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. (NTT or
9432).

Iridium's other partners in Sri Lanka will be local companies Brown & Co., which will handle its global
paging service, and Dialog GSM, which will provide international roaming facilities for mobile phones.
