Yes, the options are for 5 years, but the strike price is set at the day of hire.

Not where I work. Unless you are talking about options that are used as a signing incentive. Our annual options are priced near mkt. price at the time of grant. Most employee options have a 5 year vesting schedule that gives plenty of time for share growth. I don't feel the least bit sorry for any MSFT employee that lost 5 bucks a share yesterday. It's not like the rest of their existing options are under water I'm sure? BWDIK
