"Fermented fish juice" was a big favorite of the Romans, and staple of Asian cuisine, nuoc mam being the Vietnamese version. We have something not dissimilar in our cooking, namely, anchovy paste. If you like Worcestershire sauce, take a look at the label. Chopped finely, a little bit of anchovies adds a mysterious depth to dark sauces.
