I would think the rarity of Kuru disease would be some evidence that cannibalism itself is rare.

I know that split human marrow bones as well as bones with evidence of "pot polish" are evidence of either cannibalism or some unusual funerary rites. The question of how widespread cannibalism has been is not settled. There are experts who consider it common and experts who consider it rare.
