Thanks to several who have responded on the fixed terminal query. Of course, as Jeff notes, the numbers don't quite add up, nor are they consistent among the several analysts quoted. That gives some pause, but the numbers generally quoted are encouraging.

Bensche at Lehman gives a good writeup. Just a comment on one thing he wrote: He seems to over-emphasize the importance of the 7.5 to 10 year shift in usable life of the sats. The extended life does give additional time to recover capital costs, if the effort is marginal. But, the constellation will be overtaken by obsolescence before either the 7.5 or 10 years is reached.

While the G* system addresses a key market--underserved cellular--limitations are already clear:

1. Data rates are too slow.

2. It can't auto-switch between the local cells and the sats, so the user has to decide which to use instead of the system doing so. Use of the sats should be transparent to the user.

3. Use of the handset/terminal between voice and data should be transparent. So, for instance, the user can plug a card from his laptop into the handset "antenna" and connect to the internet just as he would do with a 28.8 modem from home or hotel.

These improvements will drive up the utility of the system enormously, and the minutes of use.

And they will be technically available before the 7.5 or 10 years of the initial sats' life is expired.

If G* doesn't put up successor sats to satisfy these items, someone else will.

Best,
JS

It is getting frustrating to have the horizon a year away all the time.

C'mon Jeff - you're a Qualcomm vet..... :) You should be used to this by noooooowwwwwww.....

Well, is kinda frustrating. But personally, I'd rather see a slower, more successful rollout, rather than a quick, botched up rollout.

Of course, we'd all rather see a fast, successful rollout. I am not too worried, yet. Especially with the recent VODairBell News......
