On Kramer and his internet "myths". fnews.yahoo.com This coming from an investment advisor, whose hedge fund lost money in 1998? Sounds about right. I hope he is not merely worried about a short-position in CMGI. . . Hey, if the president of MSFT can knock the tech-stocks and internet stocks down sharply by saying he thinks his own company is overvalued. . . then why shouldn't an investment advisor like Kramer take a shot at it? Who knows. . .maybe the markets will listen. But consider this. . . I would venture to guess that all the money he has made over the years as an investment advisor was dwarfed by the cash he made by taking TSCM public. . . and the CM of TSCM stands for "dot com" . . .HELLO??? Yes. . .the internet is the reason for the wealth. . . certainly not journalistic efforts or investment advice. So the boo-hooing about how much it costs to get a website started is just silly. . .try building factories or even distribution centers. . .build one good retail store and watch where the money goes. Whine if you want about the internet getting so much money poured into it. . . when those set-top boxes hit. . .and the personal computers go back into the closet, where they belong. . . .watch how much money is generated via the internet . . .as we approach the upward slope of the "J-curve". . .in terms of sales, eyeballs, advertising, e-commerce and B2B. The internet revolution has not yet occurred. . . the real explosion is YET TO COME. Kramer and other cynical bears can whine 'til the cows come home. . .I am fortifying with heavy investments in broadband related internet oriented companies. . . [Incidently, my published long portfolio is up about 145 percent on the year untraded.] If Mr. Kramer was a student of history, he would recognize that each revolution has been met with naysayers and with problems alike. They laughed at the horseless carraiges and were appalled that Henry Ford wanted to spend an obscene amount of money building an assembly line to make many thousands of those "rude, loud and unromantic" automobiles. Those with narrow vision scorned the railroads for tearing up the countryside. . .thousands of miles of highest quality steel track stretched from one end of the country to the other. . the money it must have taken to see such a monumental project to fruition. . . . . The early telephones were a joke. . they barely worked. . .and often didn't. . . . and radios were at first thought to be nothing more than a passing fad. . . Attitudes quickly changed as the radio won the hearts of families worldwide. . . Then television was interesting, but nobody could conceive of it ever taking the place of the radio. . .and how could television ever make any money? Same way as the internet. . . ADVERTISING. And for those with small minds or narrow vision, I suspect that the internet is seen as lumbering giant filled with nothing but hot air and ready to pop. Fortunately, there are those of us with insight. . .with farsighted vision and with imagination. . . able to recognize the difference between a rock solid business model and a fluffy scammy press release. . .able to understand the cutting edge technology and how it will affect our daily lives. . .even Kramers. . . . And there are those willing to take that bet. . . and stand WITH technology as it shuffles us along at ever increasing speeds. . .and pour investment money down the mouths of the most promising companies. I'm sure Mr. Kramer is a great guy. . .and he brings up a few interesting subjects with validity. . .but the tone of his message is one of scorn. Perhaps his belly-aching about why TSCM cannot seem to grow its business has less to do with the "ills of the internet" and more to do with the quality and often biased slant of the articles presented by TheStreet.com. Kramer finishes his rant by challenging anyone long high-tech internet stocks. . saying I will be selling you short all the shares you need of it from my trading turret at my hedge fund. And I promise you, I will never have to cover. I for one, will be there to take him up on that challenge. . .and I'll be sure to arrive in a Model A with a broadband wireless notebook computer, complete with two-way video conferencing, from which I will make my buys. Rande Is . . NOTE: This is my soapbox and these are my opinions. . .take it for what its worth.
