I think those who paid these prices think Redhat will be able to
sell most of the future Linux distributions, and get most of the
future service contracts. But I believe that wont happen, because
anyone can set up their own (maybe local) consulting, since the
distribution is freely downloadable and re-distributable. Also,
other successful distributions which build on top of Redhat's
will appear, example: linux-mandrake.com
and Corel's Debian based distribution is coming up, which looks
to be more user friendly and with even fewer errors. Plus new
ones we dont know yet. Can anyone explain how Redhat could possibly
hold on to income that would justify its current value, or even
10% of it? Redhat has done fine work in making distributions,
which I have been happy with. They also had a clear policy of not
allowing non-free software, where others cared less. Fine company,
just investors expectations of it seems crazy.
