Applied Materials' Morgan on Japanese Chip Spending: Comment

Tokyo, Sept. 24 (Bloomberg) -- James Morgan, chairman of Applied Materials Inc. of the U.S., the world's largest supplier of wafer fabrication systems and services to the global microchip industry, comments on reductions on capital spending by Japanese chipmakers.

``Asia as a whole is coming back faster than we expected. ``In Japan we're seeing a lack of participation in the DRAM (dynamic random-access memory chip) market, so Japan is missing the huge surge in pricing in DRAMs. ``We're seeing a change in focus in Japan to system-on-a- chip devices. The Japanese are very good on devices for consumer products. It's a big opportunity for us, and we're going to capitalize on that. ``Our Japanese customers are also starting to invest again in the flash memory area, supported by an increase in demand for portable phones. ``(Sony Corp.'s) PlayStation has been huge. Overall our booking rate in Japan has significantly improved in the last year, maybe as much as 40 percent. ``We're not sure if our customers are confident of making profits at the moment, but overall profitability seems to be improving.'
