I liken JDSU to Cisco, whose business model they appear to be emulating... this week Uniphase acquired a tiny Quebec firm with two niche products

I see Dell and Cisco as strong kings each lording over their respective domains... reason for citing Cisco as Uniphase's rolemodel is simple... I see Unph as garnering a staggering marketshare, and using two things to remain on top... just read recently of mktshare of 80% in fiberoptic component sector

first, Unph will acquire all small topnotch niche contributors to the fiberoptic world... they will fill in and expand their broad and powerful product line... acq of JDSFitel was really merger of equals, with equally sized sales and staffs and customers complementing nicely

second, Unph will rely in its sales approach and marketing strategy upon a serious fact of life regarding risk... customers will not want to mix&match components to multi$M systems... the JDSFitel EDFA (erbium doped fiber amp) is the key to their product line... all customers want it... therefore all customers "might as well" purchase the rest of their entire system from Unph... key niche products will ensure this king grows

I dont see huge differences between socalled kings and gorillas... but no need to jump on me... surely gorillas rule and QCOM will be larger than JDSU... look at Cisco... they have ZERO rivals ever since Wellfleet stumbled in acquired a sorryass WestCoast pieceofshit Synoptics... Cisco has been without peer since that mistake

I believe Unph will begin soon franchised mfg... I need to understand this better... I keep reading the Unph has a "franchise" lock on the fiberopt world... the buildout is happening far more quickly than the experts believed... I have a personal friend whose client is laying fiberopt lines between north/southbound lanes on I-495 (outer Boston interstate loop)

what exactly is your understanding of a franchise?
Unph has patents galore and huge leads over rivals
I see optic switches ushering in the next level
certainly Lucent and its multiplexing is paramount

appreciate any perspective on franchise leadership
thanks, jim

U/F-What do you mean by Voltaire's "training seminar"? Is this tongue-in-cheek or to be taken literally. I have followed Voltaire's wise words for about a year now, and have made much $$$ on his calls.

Please let me know. Thanks !!!

Uncle Frank, since you are into free weights, maybe you can tell me:

How much will QCOM be able to bench next year? My guess is 400 without any roids. Mucho
