Summer 1999 Issue

Brothers Crusade Against Head & Neck Cancer

According to Dr. William Lydiatt head and neck cancers may be the most devastating of all cancers. They can effect a patient's ability to eat, speak and other things which are fundamental to living a normal life.

"Head and neck cancer occurs in a bad location since it involves areas vital to communication, eating and facial appearance," said Dr. William Lydiatt. "All of these are fundamental to our daily lives and self-esteem."

Therefore, Dr. William Lydiatt along with his brother, Dr. Dan Lydiatt, are on a crusade against these devastating cancers. Not only through clinical treatment and surgery but in research and clinical trials, they are attacking these diseases from all angles. The ultimate goal is to allow the patient to resume a normal life. Both are head and neck surgical oncologists at the Head and Neck Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Head and neck cancers include malignant tumors of the mouth, throat, voice box (larynx), salivary glands, sinuses, thyroid gland, lymph nodes, ear, nose and skin of the head and neck.

There are approximately 17,000 new cases of thyroid cancer and between 50,000 and 60,000 of other head and neck cancers diagnosed each year. In total, they make up about 4% of cancers in the U.S.

The most common malignancy of the head and neck is squamous cell carcinoma. Eighty-five to 90% of all cases are related to tobacco use and risk increases when smoking and excessive drinking are combined. The survival rate depends on how advanced the disease is at the time of diagnosis but can be as high as 95%.

The unique key to the comprehensive treatment at the UNMC Head and Neck Cancer Center is the team approach. In comprising a complete treatment plan, the Lydiatts rely on a team of subspecialists. The team consists of plastic and reconstructive surgeons, dental oncologists and prosthedontists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, medical oncologists, speech and swallowing specialists and a prosthetic artist.

Director's Viewpoint

More than 55,000 Americans will develop a cancer of the head and neck this year. These cancers can affect the most basic human functions such as talking, eating or swallowing. This issue of Cancer Update features these devastating cancers and our UNMC Head and Neck Cancer Center which is a unique, full-service head and neck cancer treatment program in the Midwest.

Team strives to make head and neck cancer patients whole again

They just smile when you tell them what they do is miraculous. But what this Maxillofacial Prosthetics team does is exactly that - miraculous. They give something back to head and neck cancer patients that is fundamental to living - the ability to face the world as a 'whole' person again.

Head and neck cancers have the potential to be disfiguring and they can effect something that we cannot hide - our face. When confronted by these diseases, however, the choice is quite clear - you do whatever it takes to beat it. Even if it means losing a part of your face or that you will have to re-learn how to talk or eat.

Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer Patient Guidelines Released

Knowledge is Power. Realizing this, the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) have come together to enable breast cancer and prostate cancer patients to make thoroughly informed decisions about their own treatment.

Prostate Cancer Patient Guidelines

According to the ACS, 179,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.

Among the topics covered are: the different types of treatments available, information about clinical trials, specific information explaining the different stages of prostate cancer, various treatment paths and options for prostate cancer patients along with a "patient-friendly glossary."
