WIRELESS ACCESS SET TO EXPLODE

New study says that there will be more than 50 million wireless subscribers by 2004.

Wireless access to the Internet is on the cusp of a major boom.
The number of Internet users that access the public network over wireless links will grow from 3 million subscribers today to more than 50 million subscribers by the year 2004, according to a study conducted by the Yankee Group research firm and sponsored by Nortel Networks.

Robert,

<< T has offered wireless data for over 3 years now, however, their success has been anything but stellar >>

I thought you might be interested in this excerpt from an article called "Cellphone CPU's Face Fragmented 3G Data Specs" in EE Times (09/24/99):

"Scott Fox, chief executive of Wireless Facilities Inc., predicted that TDMA developers will rally round an Edge-like packet service extending to 384 kbits/second. Sources indicated that AT&T Wireless (the former McCaw Cellular) will abandon the Cellular Digital Packet Data standard in favor of a TDMA-compatible Edge service."

Wondering if you have any insight or would care to comment.

<< T's plans are to bypass GPRS and go straight to EDGE >>

The article seems to confirm your comment (and my previous one).
