The answer is the little box below the space in which you type. There is a box titled "Use Fixed Font". If it is checked, then your post will not be formatted, but will appear raw, just as you typed it. This is handy for posting tables, but requires you to insert carriage returns where needed. Standard SI defaults to not checking the "Use Fixed Font" button. Not knowing what the new SI does as I rarely go there, I have temporarily wandered over to it, and am typing this post into the new SI. It defaulted to "Use Fixed Font", so before posting this I will have to un-check it.

I did recently learn a handy trick. If you insert the command "pre" between <>, it toggles you to Fixed font mode, and the command "/pre" between <> toggles you back to proportional font. Note that tables are then possible:

Column A Column B
Whatever 45.0 93.0
Sample 23.0 69.3
Data 14.5 12.6

Using these commands the columns line up correctly. Note that the font looks different.

There probably is a way to change the default in the new SI to not checking the box, but I have no idea what it is. I did try leaving the box checked, but beginning the post with "/pre" between <>, and that also works.

Hope this helps,

Carl
