OK, Dave, I'll wait for you to do your research. I think you'll find that the US military has a pretty good environmental track record, especially after 1970 or so.

The DOE messes I was thinking of were the ones at Rocky Flats and Oak Ridge, and yep, both had to do with nuke production (which, BTW, is not a military problem, it is a NATIONAL GOVERNMENT problem). Another thing you need to be aware of is that a lot of things get blamed on the military for political reasons, and they are unable to defend themselves because they are under civilian political control. But, that's a whole new subject.

We can care about these issues without supporting the use of government force to resolve them. There are effective libertarian solutions to these problems.

No argument from me on this. But, I'm curious; what do you have in mind? Please give us your ideas.
