Also, it seems from the reports that just leaving the 3rd slot unused (even with a continuity module) is not
enough because the trace lengths are messing up operation. So, at the least, the mobos have to been
reworked to remove the unneeded trace length (if this is possible).


I posted about stubs possibly being the problem before reading your post #88918. You sound like you're reaching the same conclusion (stubs the culprit).

under comments and you'll see that Samsung's 128MByte module is "Validated by Intel" but the 256MByte module is not.


Samsung have been slow to update their web site. Check the Intel site for validation status. This recently showed the 128Mbit rev A devices as being validated when the Samsung site did not.
