Yes, you are correct. But from the press reports one might draw the conclusion that the traces are too long and so need to be shorten by cutting out one slot. But just dropping the slot doesn't shorten the trace and, also, realize that the termination resistors are out there beyond the third slot. So the 3rd slot has to be filled with the the continuity module else the resistors wouldn't even be connected. If these press reports are correct then a fix would be to cut the traces after the 2nd slot and provide termination resistors there. Thus the traces going to the 3rd slot would be unused "stubs" but your way of saying it is the correct way.

The above paragraph assumes that the mobos can be reworked this way and that it fixes the problem. It is about the best case scenario that I can imagine in this situation. There's only the time and cost of rework, which shouldn't be much. Then max memory is either 256MByte if 128MByte RIMMs are all that is available or 512MByte if 256MByte RIMMS are available which is all you can use even without this problem.

This is the best case scenario. I can imagine many worse scenarios which get worse and worse. But everything is just speculation at this point.
