ONEM acquires 50,000 subscribers:biz.yahoo.com Monday October 4, 7:57 am Eastern Time Company Press Release OneMain.com's Customer Base Approaches 600,000 Mark Strong External/Internal Growth Fuels Third Quarter Success RESTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 1999--OneMain.com (Nasdaq:ONEM - news), a leading national Internet Service Provider (ISP), today announced that it had acquired three regional ISPs in the third quarter of 1999 - bringing its total number of customers nationwide to more than 560,000. Through a combination of strategic acquisitions and continued strong internal subscriber growth, OneMain.com added approximately 85,000 users during the past three months. The acquisitions included Williamsport, PA-based Uplink (12,000 customers), Osterville, MA-based Cape Internet (16,000) and Warren, PA-based Penncom (22,000). In keeping with OneMain.com's business strategy, each of these ISPs is a dominant player in its market. With a footprint in 29 states, OneMain.com continues to expand its presence and solidify its position as a leading provider of local Internet access to smaller markets and rural communities across the northeast region and around the country. ``The acquisition of these market-leading regional ISPs is a logical step in OneMain.com's overall strategy to better serve smaller metropolitan markets and rural communities in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and the rest of the country,' said OneMain.com Chairman and CEO Stephen E. Smith. ``As a national ISP, we are successfully building a customer base through a mixture of strategic acquisitions and strong internal subscriber growth.' Smith noted that OneMain.com's internal growth rate remained strong in what is traditionally a slow growth quarter. Equally important, its monthly churn rate of 2.5% is amongst the lowest in the industry. Commented Smith, ``Our subscribers are staying with OneMain.com.' The company also reported that it has made significant progress on its billing integration efforts and is on target and under budget relative to its plans to migrate its customers to a common billing system. Central to OneMain.com's business strategy is its geographic communities. Unlike the large virtual communities offered by traditional ISPs, OneMain.com is building online communities based on where its customers live. This focus will enable OneMain.com customers to enjoy a unique online experience and access a powerful source of local content that will positively impact their daily lives. Content will include such important information as local news, weather, Little League scores, hunting and fishing reports, community events and school activities. Based in Reston, Virginia, OneMain.com is ``your hometown Internet.' With more than 560,000 subscribers, OneMain.com is one of the largest Internet service providers in the United States focused on providing high levels of customer service to individuals and businesses located predominantly in smaller metropolitan areas and rural communities. These customers have traditionally been under-served by national on-line service providers, and a great opportunity exists to meet the growing demand for on-line services in these markets. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Contact: Sloane & Company Darren Brandt, 212/446-1861 or OneMain.com Dan Greenfield, 703/883-8269
