I predict that SUNRAY.COM only plays to the sun.com faithful. I predict that this will not make it out of the customer base.

You may be grossly underestimating the size of the 'sun.com faithful'. Have you checked in lately with the M$.com faithful? There sure are a lot of empty pews.

I too predict that SunRay will not make it out of the customer base. I think Sun will only sell products to customers. BTW, who does M$ sell products to?

I am on record now.

Pffft There's a contiguous string of embarassment that is the alias 'twister'. I'd have changed my handle a long time ago. I can see why you don't use your real name.

<< the sun.com faithful, as I recall, was saying that the pc was DEAD, and that the world was going to move to JS. Oh the flack I got. >>

Hmmm... I don't recall much support for the super thin Java client. That's even still a bit in the future. But I can promise you that the PC will be essentially "dead". Even Microsoft has said that their focus is no longer on the desktop. Whatta bold move, but I dont think they have any other choice. They're soon going to have to build competitive server solutions for very complex e-commerce applications.... My bets are still on Sun. :)

Indeed you are, as am I. Would you care to enhance the record by making one further prediction? Microsoft has announced (but hasn't defined) something called a "Web Companion" based on Windows CE. Certainly something based on Windows CE is not particularly similar to a Wintel fat client, nor is it similar to the SunRay semismart-tube thin client. What is it most similar to? Why, goodness me, could it be the JavaStation? Don't know, we'll have to see.

I will go on record and predict that the Web Companion will cause M$ too many problems when they try to give them away with MSN memberships because it will piss off their captive partners too much. They will face a rebellion when they tell Dell and Gateway to build these zero-margin "blade" doohickies to be given away, and then go compete against Sun and IBM for the backroom "razor" business, i.e., the larger servers, when Merced and Win2000 comes out. In other words, hanging their captive OEM partners out to dry in a sure-fire failure situation since Sun already has not just a product but a whole solution to ship. (Compaq, of course, is already showing signs of waking up and jumping ship). I believe this will be a big problem for M$.

There, I am on record. What do you think, twister?
