Peter Hudson: the cost difference between GSM and CDMA

A quote from Business World in the Philippines:

"The only hitch with the CDMA technology, Mr. Erickson pointed out, is that it is twice or even thrice costly than a GSM network."

This was the report on him speaking in a media event in Singapore. Scott K. Erickson is Lucent Technologies vice-president for wireless networks group in the Asia-Pacific and China regions.

The main thrust of the article was about not needing new spectrum with cdma to 3G networks compared to the GSM migration to 3G. He fails to point out however that the ITU's vision of IMT-2000 was to be in new spectrum anyway! Also of little note in the article is that 70% of US mobile users are still on analogue systems which I find utterly amazing!

Cheers,
M
