And there I was, being impressed and thinking you were up on Dante! There are nine circles of hell.

The 9 Circles of Hell
Avernus
As the topmost layer of the Nine Hells, Avernus is often referred to in devilish circles as 'the front parlor.' Its sky is a dark red and starless. It is a rocky wasteland; the few plants are stunted and twisted. Many of the devils within this layer are out of favor deeper in the Hells, but not in so much trouble that they must flee to Ghenna or Hades. The watchdog of the Hells' front parlor, the dreaded chromatic dragon, the queen of the evil dragons. Tiamat also goes by the names Avernus and Takhisis, and is worshipped by the evil dragon highlords under the latter name.

Dis
Dis is the second layer of the hells, and is dominated by a gigantic city of the same name. This massive edifice rises from the low hills and stagnant rivers (black and poisonous) to several miles in height and hundreds of miles across. Several barriers from Avernus and other locations lead to the upper citadels of this fell city, though none lead into the stone and lead inner sanctum of Dispater himself, who rules the realm. All the lands are capped by a heavily overcast sky of dull greens lit by flickering lightning. The only known permanent conduit into Minauros is guarded by Dispater himself.

Minauros
This is the layer of the avaricious, and is ruled by Mammon, who has despoiled massive regions of this realm to build the sinking city of Minauros, his capital. The ground of the third layer is marshy and wet, and continual rains, hail, and sleet pass over the land. The only solid ground is the hard volcanic ridges that unulate across the landscape like great serpents frozen into the ground. The city Minauros is built of black stone not found in the plane, and is continually settling into the swamps. Mammon and his servants are constantly occupied with gathering more material to support the city. The land surrounding this decaying city is surrounded by rotting bodies. This plane is the most disease ridden of the lower planes - there is a strong chance that visitors to the realm will contract terrible ailments and sicknesses.

Phlegethos
This is the most infernal region of the Nine Hells, in the classical sense. It is a plane of nightmare, with active volcanos, flowing lava, and rivers of elemental fire. Those who are not protected in this violent land can expect to suffer a flaming death. Belial rules this plane from the depths of the palace of Abriymoch, built into the heart of a gigantic but extict volcano.

Stygia
Stygia is the fifth of the Nine Hells and is the only one of the lower hells connected to the Styx river. Stygia is a great frozen sea through which the Styx cuts a clear channel.

Floating islands of solid ice provide the solid ground on this layer. Atop the thick ice, small plants and mosses have taken root. Eons of decay of such matter has produced a cold swamp that exists atop ice packs, miles thick, which float on an ocean of infinite depth. Atop the frigid peaks of the islands, lightning dances from the jet-black sky, providing a substantial hazard to travellers in thie plane.

Upon one such island, the great city of Tantlin sits, ruled by Geryon. The rule of Geryon extends across vast expanses of the surface, but the depths of the Stygian Sea is unquestionably the domain of Sekolah, the great white shark worshipped by the Sahaguin.

Malbolge
The Sixth circle of Hell rests upon a huge rockfall. Most of the plane is made of city-sized angular black stones, and these cover almost the entire realm. The piling up of these stones creates vast ridges and gigantic black canyons.

The sky of the plane is alight with blood-red steam, and the odor of burning permeates the oppressive air as stinking vapors rise from the regions below. The layer of black stones, hundreds of miles in thickness, rests upon an infinite sea of lava, which heats the vast pits of boiling pitch in which the damned souls are tormented.

The entire plane is dotted with the copper-shod fortresses of the Arch-Devil Moloch, who rules the plane as Baalzebul's viceroy. Baalzebul denies Moloch a permanent home, and forces him to move from location to location often.

Maladomini
The Seventh of the infernal planes is Maladomini.

The following drawing is all that remains of a hapless adventurer who had the misfortune to visit the city of Malagard. It appears to be an image of the main gates of the dread city, which gape open eternally in the likeness of the jaws of a great diabolical beast.

Sorry, could not retrieve the drawing....
